About

I write historical novels that combine mystery and suspense with a powerful sense of place.

As the son of a U.S. Foreign Service officer, I grew up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. and a long list of extraordinary places, from the Philippines, Myanmar, and Germany, to the Soviet Union, Cuba, and Nicaragua. I collected vivid memories alongside the excitement and challenge of constantly calling new places home. At embassies staffed by diplomats, marines, and spies, I was always surrounded by secrets.

In addition to writing books, I’ve been a newspaper reporter, a political science lecturer, and a medical practice manager. I’m also a published poet. I live in Massachusetts, where you can find me haunting coffee shops, taking long walks with my wife, and practicing martial arts.
